Vernon Oscar "Tige" Beal

1906 - 1966

 

Tige Beal was born July 19, 1906 at Deer Creek, Oklahoma and moved to Anthony, Kansas shortly thereafter.  He is known to have entered the car above in races at Winfield, Kansas on July 29, 1933, races at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson on July 4, 1934 where the photo above was taken and he also entered races at Clay County Fair at Clay Center, Kansas on September 10, 1936.

Tige married Emma Ione Wilcox in Medford, Oklahoma on March 2, 1934 and they made their home in Anthony, Kansas.

Tige formed the Southern Racing Association sanctioning body and served as its president while Emma was the secretary.  Under that organization, Tige promoted auto races at Anthony Downs in Anthony until 1940 even though he and Emma had moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1938.  He continued his involvement in auto racing in Tulsa as an owner of midget racing cars.  Tige passed away in Tulsa on May 19, 1966 and is buried in Forest Park Cemetery at Anthony, Kansas.  The Beals had no children – Charles Pauley photo
